Kansas City podiatrist explains how to avoid heel pain flare-ups when wearing summer shoes.

Summer sandals don’t mean so-long orthotics!

It’s finally springtime in Overland Park, Kansas.  Everything is blooming and the sun is shining.  It’s time to put those winter clothes away for the season.  You are no longer suffering from heel pain since you have been wearing your Sole Support orthotics all winter.  You pull out your summer sandals and flip-flops and now what?

“It is inevitable that people, who have seen remarkable improvements in their heel pain because of orthotics, are back in to see me at the end of the summer complaining that their pain has returned.  They stop wearing their orthotics, because of their summer sandals and they end up taking significant strides backwards in their care,” says south Kansas City podiatrist Dr. Mark Green.

So what can you do to enjoy your summer sandals and still maintain proper arch support?  The solution is simple, really.  There are so many great looking sandals that you can wear that will accommodate your custom orthotics.  The key is to look for shoes that have a removable foot bed or sandals that have a back lip.  That back part is what will keep the orthotic in place.  Traditional flip-flops are not going to work with your orthotics, but those flip-flops are probably what brought you in to see Dr. Green in the first place!

Some of the more familiar brands that will accommodate custom orthotics are:

  • Birkenstocks
  • Clarks
  • Dansko
  • Ecco
  • Finn Comfort
  • Hush Puppies
  • Mephisto
  • Merrell
  • Naot
  • Naturalizer
  • Softwalk
  • Columbia

All of these shoes have great summer styles and you can use your orthotics to get maximum support.  Now that you have your sandals covered, don’t forget about your dress shoes!  Orthotics aren’t only made for your athletic shoes.  Where ever your foot goes, your orthotics should go as well!

Some brands that will accommodate orthotics for dress shoes are:

  • Aerosoles
  • Josef Seibel
  • Florsheimfft
  • LifeStrides
  • SAS
  • Stuart Weitzman

If you change your shoes a lot, the best thing to do is get multiple pairs of orthotics.  Why be bothered with remembering to switch your orthotics every time you change your shoes?  Multiple pairs mean that every time you put on a new pair of shoes you are ready to go!  Some insurance plans even cover multiple pairs of orthotics.  If not, Kansas City Foot and Ankle offers a discount if you order multiple pairs.  The best thing to do is call our office and we will be happy to check your insurance benefits.

If you order one pair of orthotics and then decide later that multiple pairs are the way to go…no problem!  Just call our office and we are happy to order more.  The lab keeps your molds for up to 3 years.  No need for another appointment.  Just call us and let us know the color and style of the orthotic you wish to order.  We will submit your order.  It is that simple.

Keep your feet feeling great year-round.  Don’t be one of those patients coming in to see Dr. Green in September because you’ve gone all summer without your orthotics.  Instead, take a giant stride forward in feeling great and being pain-free by wearing “orthotic-ready” sandals!
