It’s finally summer in Kansas City! The podiatrists at Kansas City Foot and Ankle share these five tips for healthy feet this summer.
Think twice before going barefoot: If your summer plans include spending time at neighborhood pools or local water parks, working out at the gym, staying in hotels while on vacation and going through airport security, plan ahead so you are not going barefoot in such places. Unfortunately, going barefoot where other people have can lead to contracting the viruses and fungi that cause athletes foot, plantar warts and toenail fungus.
Choose your summer shoes wisely: Summer shoes such as flip flops and sandals with little to no support, can cause all sorts of painful problems. These can include blisters, soreness, heel pain, knee pain and back pain. Find proper fitting shoes that provide good support. If you wear custom orthotics, wear sandals that will accommodate your custom insoles.
Protect your feet near fireworks and fire pits: Wear shoes while enjoying fireworks or s’mores near a fire pit. Burns on the feet can be very painful and are at risk fr infection. Be sure to protect your feet by wearing shoes and if a burn or sore occurs on your feet, seek the medical attention of your local podiatrist at Kansas City Foot and Ankle.
Get your feet ready for summer: Now is the time to get your feet ready for show. Whether you’re heading to the salon or plan to do it yourself, check out these Pedicure Pointers published by the American Podiatric Medical Association. This handy list of do’s and don’ts will have you walking out of the salon with healthy feet.
Keep your feet looking good all summer: Trim your toenails by clipping them straight across and then file to smooth the edges. If you have callouses, do not attempt to remove them. You can use a pumice stone to file them down. Be sure to file in the same direction not back and forth which can damage the skin. If you have painful callouses or corns, visit your foot doctor at Kansas City Foot and Ankle to have them safely treated. Cracked heels can be smoothed by using a pumice stone in the shower and applying a rich moisturizer afterwards. Lastly, don’t forget your feet when applying sunblock, they need protection, too!
