Common Misconceptions About Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is painful when the plantar fascia at the bottom of your feet becomes irritated and inflamed. There are several common misconceptions about plantar fasciitis, and it's beneficial to know what information is the truth vs. what is a myth when dealing with this issue. At Kansas City Foot & Ankle, serving patients in Downtown Kansas City, North Kansas City, & Lee's Summit, MO, our providers are ready to meet with you for foot pain and mobility issues.

Plantar Fasciitis Can be Treated

One common misconception about plantar fasciitis is that it is a permanent condition with minimal resolution. Although it can take a year or more for plantar fasciitis pain to subside completely, this is not a permanent condition you simply have to live with. Once your plantar fascia becomes inflamed, it takes time and rest for the fascia to restore itself. Although it may feel like your plantar fasciitis will never get better, the problem gets progressively better over a year or so.

Other Misconceptions of Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is not a hereditary condition, and it is not caused by flat feet. Good foot support can help you avoid plantar fasciitis, but flat feet are not why you experience the condition. Plantar fasciitis is not generally treated by surgery, and cortisone shots only cover up the pain. It is also important to know that heel spurs do not cause plantar fasciitis, yet many people with the condition also have heel spurs. Complete rest is not necessary for plantar fasciitis, and the goal is to find an activity level that does not cause additional pain to develop.

Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis

Treatment for plantar fasciitis includes stretching the bottom of your feet to reduce pain and stiffness. When your plantar fascia is inflamed, the tissue gets tight, and blood flow is restricted. Stretching improves blood flow to the area and helps your fascia heal. You will want to stretch consistently and wear supportive shoes whenever you are walking or standing. Ice, anti-inflammatory medication, and night braces to keep your feet stretched can all decrease the pain caused by plantar fasciitis.
