He created a song that everyone could relate to.  The lyrics to his song Under Pressure, universally explain the negative impact stress can have on our lives. Life today, is more stressful than ever. Our mind isn’t the only place vulnerable to stress. Our bodies can succumb under pressure, too.   Our feet carry the weight of our entire body, and with every step must absorb the force of hitting the ground while keeping us upright. Biomechanically speaking, it’s an incredible system.  But when a hard, repeated force or motion is applied, the bones of the foot become susceptible to what is known as a stress fracture.
A stress fracture is a small crack in the bone. It can cause extreme pain on the top or bottom of the foot accompanied by redness and swelling. Up to 15% of all sports injuries are stress fractures. Sports that are commonly associated with stress fractures include marathon running, tennis, gymnastics, and basketball.  When we put pressure on the foot during walking or exercising, our muscles coordinate specific movements to absorb shock. After extensive periods of high impact physical activities, the muscles fatigue and the bones take the brunt of the load. The bones can’t adapt to this excessive force and they develop small cracks. The bones of the mid foot and the heel are especially sensitive to fractures of this type.  People who take breaks from their normal exercise routine and jump right back into it, or those who have never been very active and over enthusiastically push themselves, are more likely to develop a stress fracture in their foot. Proper warm up and shoes are important.  Also keep in mind that when trying to reach your fitness goal, slow and steady always wins the race. Know the limitations of your body and listen to what it tells you.
